World Wetlands Day – Goldcliff Lagoons

There’s something quietly powerful about wetlands. They don’t shout for attention, but if you slow down and listen, they tell some of the most important stories in nature.

On World Wetlands Day, my thoughts drift naturally to Goldcliff Lagoons—a place I return to time and again with a camera in hand and mud on my boots. Here, water, sky, and land blur into one, creating a living, breathing mosaic that supports an astonishing diversity of life. From restless flocks of waders probing the shallows to elegant avocets sweeping their bills through the lagoons, this is a landscape that never stands still.

Wetlands like Goldcliff are nature’s unsung heroes. They protect us from flooding, lock away carbon, filter our water—and, perhaps most importantly, offer sanctuary. On cold winter mornings or soft summer evenings, they remind us why these places matter, not just for wildlife, but for us too.

Today is a celebration, but also a gentle nudge: wetlands need care, respect, and protection. If these photographs do one thing, I hope they encourage you to visit, observe, and fall a little bit in love with these fragile, beautiful places—just as I have.

Because when wetlands thrive, everything else has a fighting chance.
