A Goldcliff Gang member lost
Hugh Gregory on the Redshank Platform at Goldcliff Lagoons. |
I was shocked to learn this week of the very sad news of the passing of Hugh Gregory after a short illness.
Hugh was a very passionate and talented photographer and birder. He had a huge love of nature and a really good sense of humour.
I first got to know Hugh through his pictures. He was a prolific photographer and he came to my notice through his beautiful images of the Severn Bridges at sunrise and the birdlife that lived around them.
His images were stunning and it was obvious he had a keen eye for composition. More images started to get posted via various media websites. Hugh visited Magor Marsh regularly and had quite a few pictures published by the Gwent Wildlife Trust.
It was not long before Hugh discovered Goldcliff Lagoons and fell in love with place. It was only a matter of time before I bumped into Hugh wearing his trademark camouflage jacket carrying his camera with his tripod over his shoulder.
I immediately liked him and found he had a really great sense of humour. I spent many an hour putting the world to right and having a laugh in the hides and on the platforms.
Until I had met Hugh there were very few people who could beat me getting to Goldcliff at stupid o'clock, but Hugh did, week in and week out. I would turn up on a Saturday morning before dawn and be greeted by Hugh from the Redshank Platform with a smile on his face and having a sneaky fag.
I will really miss his company on future cold mornings before sunrise at Goldcliff Lagoons.
Hugh had keen eyes and rarely missed a trick. He was a member of Gwent Ornithological Society and in the most recently published 2020 report Hugh had one of his bird pictures printed. Most notably a very rare sighting of a Leech's Petrel in Gwent.
Hugh was also a select member of a little Facebook Group named the Goldcliff Gang. Its members, John,Terry, both Pauls, Sarah and Phil will miss you greatly.
So with a heavy heart I say goodbye to a lovely man, who was a talented photographer and great birder.
May he rest in peace.
Condolences and best wishes to Hughs family.
